Eremurus, also known as Desert Candles, Foxtail Lilies and Torch Plants are native to the dry,
rocky, nearly barren, semi desert habitats of Western Asia and the subalpine grasslands of
Afghanistan and Western China. The name comes from two greek words, eremia meaing
desert and oura meaing tail. There are over 40 Eremurus species native to these regions.
The natural color range is yellow, pink and white, but hybridizers have extended this range
considerably.
The plants prefer rich, well drained soil with full sun and protection from wind. They should
be mulched in winter. Plant 2-3" deep and 36" apart.
